Monument, CO History
Monument, Colorado, is a town situated in El Paso County in the state of Colorado, United States. It is part of the Colorado Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located approximately 20 miles north of Colorado Springs and around 50 miles south of Denver. As of the 2020 United States Census, the town had a population of 8,010. However, the surrounding area, commonly referred to as the Tri-Lakes region (consisting of Palmer Lake, Monument, and Woodmoor), has a larger population and serves as a suburban community for both Colorado Springs and Denver.
The history of Monument can be traced back to the mid-19th century. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by indigenous peoples, primarily the Ute and Arapaho tribes. The settlement gained significance with the advent of the Rio Grande Railroad, which facilitated transportation and commerce. The town was officially incorporated on June 2, 1879. Its name is said to have been derived from Monument Creek, a stream that descends from the Rampart Range, traverses through the town, and eventually merges with Fountain Creek. The term “Monument” is thought to refer to the large rock formations and “monuments” in the area, such as Monument Rock.
In its early years, the town’s economy was primarily based on agriculture and the lumber industry. The area’s rich soil and availability of water resources made it suitable for farming and livestock rearing. Additionally, the town was a hub for lumber milling operations, given its proximity to the forests of the Rampart Range. As the region progressed through the 20th century, there was a gradual shift from an agriculture-based economy to one that was more diversified. Today, Monument serves as a bedroom community for Colorado Springs and hosts a variety of businesses, including tech companies, retail outlets, and service providers.
Key milestones in Monument’s development include the establishment of the Lewis-Palmer School District #38, one of the state’s top-performing school districts, and the construction of the I-25 corridor, which improved accessibility to and from Colorado Springs and Denver, thereby attracting a more diverse population to the area. The town also boasts parks and recreational facilities, making it attractive for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
Over the years, the town has experienced significant residential growth, partially due to its scenic beauty and partially due to its strategic location between two major cities. However, it still retains much of its small-town charm, exemplified by a downtown area that features historic buildings and locally-owned businesses. Despite the challenges posed by rapid growth, such as concerns over water supply and land use, Monument continues to be a desirable place to live for those who appreciate both natural beauty and proximity to urban amenities.
In summary, Monument, Colorado has a rich history that encompasses indigenous heritage, agricultural roots, and contemporary suburban development. Its strategic location and natural beauty make it a unique place that has evolved over the years, balancing growth and preservation.
